Planning For Next Outing

I’m having a week or so away starting next Wednesday so kit preparation is beginning to loom fairly large in my thoughts. The outing will not be lightweight backpacking, but a base camp with day walks from there.

This time my wife and I will drive to Market Rasen and using an Endurance GB (long distance horse riding) multi-day event to camp on the race course. We put in some time and work for Endurance GB and also get some good forest walks as well as open country. This area of Lincolnshire is not the traditional ‘flat land’ of former fenland but extensively wooded – woods that have decent footpaths and bridleways.

So, when our ‘working’ day is finished we have short walks immediately available, virtually from the tent doorway.

I don’t have to think especially deeply to select kit for this endeavour – I have a list which has evolved over a period of years. Changes are made every year as I accumulate new gear and discard bits and pieces which probably only perform a single function. It’s also a great time to run tests on bits and pieces I have made and want to try before taking them into general usage.

We also have a new ‘family’ tent to try. It’s a six person, three bedroom, unit with space to cook or sit in comfort (in folding chairs – luxury eh?). More importantly this tent has height enough to stand upright.

I’ll blog some more as the preparations evolve. No more until Monday at earliest as we’re having a family weekend with sons from Edinburgh and Sheffield – one is coming to sky dive from a local airfield.
